The DISD residency poll: Should top execs be required to live within DISD attendance boundaries?

ImagesAs you probably know, there's quite a scuffle going on at DISD headquarters about whether or not top DISD executives should be required to live within the school district's attendance boundaries. The Morning News has written a story or two about it, and so have we here at Back Talk (click on this link to see the stories and previous discussion). We're interested in your thoughts on the issue, so we've posted a poll (it's in the upper right hand corner on this page) to gauge neighborhood opinion. Make your choice, and we'll forward the poll results to the appropriate DISD trustees when the poll ends Sunday morning, Oct. 21. After you vote, please post some comments to this post below; we'll forward DISD a link to the comments, too.

If good people are hard to find, and it is my experience that they are, then the residency requirement is short-sighted and counter productive. At best, it's only window dressing. If you actually value community, then why would you forcefully uproot someone from the community of their choosing and force them to live in yours? What does this say about the priorities of the person who would agree to do such a thing? To me, it suggests that they are primarily in it for the money. If they are the kind of people you hope them to be, then they should be given the chance to move within the District of their own free will. Even if they don't, how many of us work effectively and honorably within communities other than our own. I certainly like to think I do.

Once again, the fundamental task of the DISD, providing our kids with the best education possible, has been compromised for a social engineering agenda.

The Dallas Fort Worth metroplex is large diverse community made of many smaller communities. Why should we put a requirement on DISD executives that large Dallas area corporations do not have on their employees? If we remain focused on the children, we need to have the best possible candidates. I don't care where they live as long as they are dedicated to DISD's objectives and success.

Agreed!!
