Is there another city that owns and operates a convention center hotel that Dallas has benchmarked? Seems kind of funny that government at all levels is outsourcing to private industry (in some cases it could be argued too much outsourcing is going on) but Dallas wants to get into the one business that is almost exclusively a private endeavor.

Houston has most-often been cited as an example of a city-owned convention center hotel that "works", although it's difficult to determine how to assess that statement. For the most comprehensive story detailing the background of the convention center hotel discussion over the past five years, along with some interesting links to a couple of related studies, check out this Dallas Observer story by Sam Merten...

Here's another interesting collection of information, courtesy of the City of Dallas, concerning the convention center hotel project: The city has posted a series of documents, including the 2008 analysis of the hotel that led to the council's decision to build and own the facility, that have been used to arrive at the point we're at today.

Why not use the money for better things like our education system? We're going to lay off teachers because of some accounting error but we can come up with the money to foot the bill for some hotel that we really don't need. You council members that approved this BS need educated! I would rather have my tax dollars used for the education of our community kids than some hotel that won't even be occupied two-thirds of the time! Think about it!!!
