The second trial in the abduction-slaying case of Oscar Sanchez whose family runs La Calle Doce here in Lakewood is about to get underway. Several months ago the first defendant in the case, former DISD teacher Jose Felix, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for his part in the crime. Today jury selection is scheduled to begin in the capital murder trial of 27-year-old co-defendant, Edgar "Richie" Acevedo. Here's a recap of the events leading up to this trial.
I've read so many stories in the last year of Hispanic business owners being robbed and/or kidnapped. One reason they are targets is because some of them are trying to run at least partially cash businesses, and others know this. I am not saying that is the case with Mr. Sanchez, but in reading similar stories, that is often reported, "They knew he kept large amounts of cash." I think, as is often the case, entitlement also plays a part. Friends, coworkers and even family often think if someone they know works hard and becomes successful, "gets rich," that they ought to share and then when they don't, if there is a criminal element, that may be all it takes for them to justify a brutal crime and ruin people's lives as has been done here.
